Garrett Turbo Overboost: Causes and Fixes

Turbochargers generate pressure, but that pressure must remain within a controlled range. When a Garrett turbo produces more boost than the engine management system expects, the engine may lose drivability and enter protective mode.

What Causes a Garrett Turbo to Overboost?

An overboost condition happens when boost pressure continues to climb beyond the commanded target. On wastegated Garrett turbos, this issue often traces back to a wastegate that fails to respond correctly. A sticking mechanism or a weak actuator may allow exhaust energy to keep spinning the turbine harder than intended.

Once the technician completes testing, they typically find the repair falls into a few familiar categories. They might find a damaged hose that needs replacement or a wastegate actuator that no longer responds correctly. In other cases, they may need to restore vane movement in a VNT system or repair an electrical connection.

A faulty boost-control solenoid can also cause the issue. Whatever the failure point is, avoid adjusting boost targets to compensate. This usually hides the real problem and can create new ones later.
